Cart and checkout

The receipt cart, gift wrapping, discounts, gift cards, and the accelerated checkout buttons.

Curio’s cart is styled as a receipt: perforated edges, dot-leader total rows, and a monospace timestamp. It is the one place in the theme where that treatment is allowed, because it is the one place a shopper is reading a transaction rather than browsing.

Drawer or page#

Theme settings → Cart → Cart type.

  • Drawer (default) — slides in over the page. Adding to cart never costs the shopper their place in a collection, which for browse-heavy resale stock is worth a lot.
  • Page — navigates to /cart. The same receipt treatment, full width. Easier for shoppers reviewing a large order, and the more familiar pattern for trade buyers.

Both are fully keyboard operable, and the drawer traps focus, closes on Escape, and returns focus to whatever opened it. The cart page still exists when the drawer is on, and still works.

What is in the cart#

RowNotes
Line itemsImage on a mat, title, variant, condition grade, quantity, line price
Cart noteA free-text field, on by default. Resale buyers use it constantly — “please don’t fold the collar”. Switch it off in Theme settings → Cart.
DiscountsCart-level discounts show as their own rows with the discount title and amount
SubtotalLabelled honestly: the number shown is the cart total after cart-level discounts
Tax note“Tax included” appears when your prices include tax
CheckoutThe primary button, plus any accelerated checkout buttons
Sign in with ShopOn by default, and only rendered when customer accounts are enabled

Quantities update in place without a page reload, and the change is announced to screen readers. Removing the last item shows a designed empty state, not a blank panel.

Gift wrapping#

Curio can offer gift wrapping as a checkbox in the cart. It is off by default because it needs a product to sell.

  1. Create a product for the wrapping — Gift wrapping, priced however you like, including free.
  2. Set it to Track quantity off, or keep enough stock that it never runs out. Curio only shows the option while the product’s first variant is available.
  3. Turn on Theme settings → Cart → Offer gift wrapping and pick the product.

The wrap is added to the cart as an ordinary line item, so it is priced, taxed, and discounted like anything else, and it appears on the order for your packing bench to see. The checkbox shows the price, or the word Free when the product is free. Ticking it again is prevented — the theme knows when the wrap is already in the cart.

Do not hide the wrapping product. It needs to stay published for the cart to add it. It will not show up in collections unless you put it in one.

Discounts#

Discount codes are entered at checkout, not in the cart — that is Shopify’s flow and no theme can change it. What Curio does is show the result properly: automatic discounts and cart-level discounts appear as their own labelled rows, and line-level discounts show under the affected line. Nothing is silently folded into a smaller number.

Accelerated checkout#

Shop Pay, PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay — whatever you have enabled in Settings → Payments appears on both the product page and in the cart, on by default. You can turn them off per block in Buy buttons.

Their internals are Shopify’s and are deliberately left unstyled: they have to look exactly as shoppers expect them to look, because that recognition is what makes them convert.

Shop Pay Installments messaging appears automatically on the product page when your store and the product qualify.

Gift cards#

If you sell gift cards, the recipient form appears on the product page: the buyer can enter the recipient’s email, a name, a message, and a send date. Nothing to configure — it shows up for gift card products.

Curio also styles the gift card that the recipient receives, with the code, barcode, and balance on a receipt-style card. Nothing to configure there either.

Selling plans#

Products with subscriptions or prepaid plans get a Purchase options block on the product page — ruled radio rows, one per plan, with the plan price and any discount shown. The chosen plan carries through to the cart and appears on the order.

For most resale stores this is not relevant. It is worth knowing about if you run a subscription box of curated finds, which is a model this theme suits.

Checkout itself#

Checkout is Shopify’s, and its appearance is set in Settings → Checkout — not in the theme. Curio’s colors do not carry over automatically, so if you want checkout to look like the store, set the checkout branding there to match your scheme:
